How to set good blog goals for the new year

Creating Your Blogging Goals

These are important things to consider when blog goal setting for the next year, month, or even next week.

1.     Consider What You Are Trying To Accomplish

Your goals should be specific to your website and your ultimate objective. Why did you create your blog? What are you currently lacking in order to reach that goal? For example, perhaps your blog is full of tutorials and how-tos. If you’re trying to inform, maybe your goal should be to engage a certain demographic or to increase traffic flow to a certain page or post.

2.     Visualize Your End Goal

Visualize your ideal blog. What does it look like? How does the content read? How are you interacting with your audience? Who is your audience? This will help you see where you are right now, and where you want to be. This will also reignite your passion and remind you why you started your website in the first place!

3.     Find Inspiration in Role Models

If you’re having trouble visualizing your ideal blog, review some sites that inspire you or that you think are done well. What are they doing that you’re not? What do you see in that blog that you don’t see in yours? Use examples of success to inspire objectives for your own site.

4.     Set Time Bound Goals

“Someday, somehow” isn’t going to work when it comes to blog goal setting. What do you want to accomplish by the end of the year? Try not to go longer than that, as you begin to lose that sense of urgency that comes with time-bound tasks.

5.     Identify Obstacles

Think about why you haven’t taken these steps so far. What are your obstacles? Is it time, funding, or maybe just motivation? By acknowledging what has been holding you back, you can make a plan to conquer and overcome. It’s important to remember that some limits can’t be overcome, and so perhaps these are not reasonable objectives.

6.     Create Specific Goals

Don’t create vague objectives like “make my blog better” or “increase my site traffic.” What are you trying to make better? By how much can you feasibly increase traffic? Narrow these goals down to “improve my website layout” or “increase traffic by 10%.”

7.     Don’t Create Too Many Goals

After imagining your ideal blog, you might have so many goals that you could fill a notebook. Resist the temptation of trying to get to the finish line before you’ve even started running. Look at what you can accomplish in the next year, and stick to those objectives.

8.     Be Realistic

Don’t be so ambitious that your blog goals are impossible to accomplish- make sure that they are realistic. A goal that can’t be completed won’t be helpful to you, your blog, or anyone else. Of course you want 1,000 subscribers to your email newsletter, but you need to hit 100, first.

9.     Challenge Yourself With Your Blog Goals

Though you want your objectives to be realistic and achievable, you also want to challenge yourself with your goals. If you want to post more frequently, for example, don’t settle for one blog post a month. See if you can post one post a week. See what I mean? Make sure you’re not taking the easy street when blog goal setting.

10. Create a Plan

Create a plan of steps you need to take to accomplish each goal. Create a timeline and action plan of goals that should be accomplished first, as well as ones that might take several individual steps to be accomplished. This could entail creating several different deadlines for each goal.

11.Take Time To Review

Set aside time every week or month to take a look at your tasks. Are you sticking to your plan? Are you on schedule? Your plan might need tweaking to keep yourself on track. This is also a great way to encourage yourself by looking back at everything you’ve accomplished so far!

12. Write Your Goals Down

13. Break Big Dreams Down Into Smaller Goals

The phrase “It’s a marathon, not a sprint” applies to blog goal setting. There are times when it makes sense to break one large goal down into smaller ones. Let’s look at our “one website post per week” goal. Maybe this isn’t attainable right away due to lack of content, research, etc. You can start off with a post every other week, and work into posting every week.

14. Consider How Your Goals Fit Together

Look at your objectives through the lens of what you are trying to accomplish. More likely than not, you have a few that work together to accomplish an even larger goal. Sometimes, you can take steps to accomplish more than one goal at once!

15. Be Disciplined, Flexible, and Forgiving

Your blog goals should be all about making progress, not just keeping busy. And so you need to stay on top of your activities, but also be able to recognize when you might have to make a change. If something isn’t working, then it isn’t a good goal or process. And remember to forgive yourself for not meeting every single deadline- as long as you’re making strides toward your goals, you’re already halfway there!

Your blog goal setting strategy should involve evaluating your end goal. Think about the big picture and what you need to do to get there. From there, set attainable, time-bound, and specific goals that you can realistically accomplish.
